Staying Healthy Together: COVID-19 Vaccines and What You Should Know

Gretchen Arnoczy, M.D.At FirstHealth, we’ve been hearing from many of our patients who have questions about the updated COVID-19 vaccine: Who should get it? Where is it available? Do I need a prescription? Because the guidance around vaccine eligibility and availability is still evolving, we want to provide information directly from our infectious diseases team. Check out the latest from Gretchen Arnoczy, M.D., of FirstHealth Infectious Diseases.

Over the last several years, our community has faced the challenges of COVID-19 together. Thanks to vaccines, treatments and better understanding of the virus, we are in a very different place today than we were in 2020. COVID-19 is no longer the worldwide emergency it once was, but it continues to cause illness and even deaths — especially among older adults and people with underlying health conditions.

While worldwide the situation has improved, things can change in a person's health. Someone with a hearty immune system a few years ago may be in a different situation this year if they are getting chemotherapy. It’s important to talk to your doctor and care providers when making decisions about your health.

At FirstHealth, our commitment to protecting your health has never wavered. Each fall and winter, we encourage patients to take simple steps that reduce the risk of serious illness — staying up to date on flu shots, practicing good hand hygiene and, when appropriate, receiving a COVID-19 vaccine.

The updated vaccines for COVID-19 for the 2025–26 season have been FDA approved for:

  • Adults age 65 and older
  • People with certain health conditions that increase their risk for complications

The decision to receive a COVID-19 vaccine may depend on your personal health situation and some people without risk factors may benefit from the additional protection a vaccine provides. It’s important to talk with your provider. Together, you can determine whether the vaccine makes sense for you this year.

We know there are many questions right now about who can receive the updated COVID-19 vaccine and how to access it. Federal and state guidelines are evolving, and our teams at FirstHealth are working closely with public health officials and pharmacies to understand what this means for our community. As soon as clear information is available, we will share details on how to get the vaccine.

Even as recommendations shift, one thing remains the same: FirstHealth’s commitment to the health and well-being of our community. We appreciate your patience and trust as we navigate these changes together.
