When people hear the term plastic surgery, they often think about cosmetic procedures like facelifts, breast augmentation or tummy tucks.
But plastic surgery encompasses much more than aesthetics-focused procedures. Modern plastic and reconstructive surgery help patients restore function, improve quality of life and regain confidence after cancer treatment, injury, illness or other life-changing experiences.
In a recent episode of the FirstHealth & Wellness Podcast, FirstHealth and Pinehurst Surgical Clinic plastic and reconstructive surgeon Will DeBrock, M.D., discussed how innovations in technology, surgical techniques and patient-centered care are reshaping the field.
Plastic Surgery Is More Than Cosmetic Enhancement
One of the biggest misconceptions about plastic surgery is that it focuses solely on appearance.
Dr. DeBrock explains that plastic and reconstructive surgeons receive training in both cosmetic and reconstructive procedures throughout their residency.
"Anyone who is a plastic surgeon has gotten training in both plastic and reconstructive surgery, and it's the same field."
While cosmetic procedures often receive the most public attention, reconstructive surgery represents a significant portion of the specialty and can have a profound impact on patients' daily lives. Many reconstructive procedures are designed to address physical symptoms, restore form after cancer treatment and improve overall function.
Helping Patients Understand Their Plastic Surgery Options
According to Dr. DeBrock, one of the most important aspects of his role is patient education.
Many people are unaware that insurance may cover medically necessary procedures, including some breast reductions and breast reconstruction surgeries.
"People have a lot more options than they might know,” he said. "A lot of us, including myself, do many, many insurance-based procedures that are designed to improve quality of life."
That knowledge can be life-changing for patients who have lived with discomfort or who believe treatment is financially out of reach.
How Breast Implant Technology Has Improved
Advances in implant design have significantly improved patient outcomes over the years.
Dr. DeBrock notes that today's implants are designed to provide better aesthetics while reducing long-term complications.
"We're currently on the sixth generation of breast implants, which are far superior to the ones before them, and they're all aimed at minimizing long-term complications while improving aesthetics,” he said.
Newer implants help lower the risk of complications such as capsular contracture, while also creating a more natural appearance and feel.
"The newest implants have lowered the rate of what's called capsular contracture, which is when your breast gets this really firm scar tissue around it,” he said.
Less Invasive Approaches and Faster Recovery
Innovations in implant technology have created opportunities for less invasive approaches and shorter recovery times.
Dr. DeBrock explains that surgeons can now often place implants above the chest muscle, reducing surgical disruption and helping patients return to normal activities more quickly.
"Now, more often than not, we're putting them on top of the muscle so that we don't have to disrupt the muscle at all, which is leading to quicker recoveries,” DeBrock said.
This can be especially important for active patients who want to maintain their lifestyle and physical activities after surgery.
Breast Reconstruction Rights Every Patient Should Know
For breast cancer survivors, understanding reconstruction options is critical.
One of Dr. DeBrock's strongest messages focused on raising awareness about insurance coverage and reconstructive rights following mastectomy.
"The biggest advocacy thing for me is to let people know about their breast reconstruction rights,” DeBrock said.
Many patients do not realize that insurance coverage for breast reconstruction extends beyond the cancer-affected breast and may include procedures performed for symmetry and balance.
"I want people to know that whether you had cancer in 1966 or 2026, all these options are available to you," he said. "If you've ever had breast cancer, if you haven't consulted with a plastic surgeon, you should."
He also emphasizes the importance of consulting both a breast surgeon and a plastic surgeon before making treatment decisions.
A More Personalized Approach to Plastic Surgery
Perhaps the most significant evolution in plastic surgery isn't technology at all.
Dr. DeBrock believes the specialty has shifted from a physician-driven model toward a collaborative partnership where patients play a central role in decision-making.
"It's much more of a collaboration with the patient than it has been in the past,” DeBrock said.
Patients today arrive informed, often bringing photographs that help communicate their goals and expectations. These conversations allow surgeons and patients to work together to create realistic treatment plans that align with lifestyle, anatomy and desired outcomes.
Separating Social Media Trends from Realistic Results
While social media has increased awareness of plastic surgery, it has also created unrealistic expectations for some patients.
Dr. DeBrock says helping patients understand the difference between edited images and achievable outcomes is an important part of consultation and surgical planning.
Each person's anatomy, body type and surgical goals are different, which makes individualized care essential.
By discussing realistic outcomes and helping patients understand how factors like body structure influence results, surgeons can help patients make confident, informed decisions.
The Future of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
Dr. DeBrock is optimistic about where the field is headed. He believes advances in implants, surgical techniques and patient-centered care will continue to improve outcomes and experiences.
Most importantly, he sees a new generation of surgeons committed to building relationships and helping patients achieve meaningful improvements in their lives. For patients considering cosmetic surgery, reconstructive procedures or breast reconstruction after cancer treatment, today's options are more advanced and personalized than ever before.
