Light Up a Life Honors Loved Ones and Caregivers

From November 24 through the end of the year, the FirstHealth Hospice Garden glows with seasonal lights and moments of reflection during the annual Light Up a Life event.

This longtime memorial and fundraising tradition honors loved ones and celebrates the compassionate work of FirstHealth Hospice and Palliative Care staff and volunteers—those who dedicate themselves to supporting individuals and families at life’s end.

A Tradition of Light and Love

At the garden entrance, the Trees of Life shimmer with light, while luminarias bearing the names of loved ones and caregivers gently illuminate the paths of the labyrinth and surrounding garden. A tribute list is published in the Dec. 24, 2025, edition of The Pilot newspaper.

This meaningful event is made possible through generous gifts to The Foundation of FirstHealth Hospice and Palliative Care Fund.

How Light Up a Life Makes a Difference

Donations from efforts such as Light Up a Life benefit all FirstHealth Hospice and Palliative Care patients and families, including Phyllis Shaw, whose husband, Alexander, passed in April 2025.

Mrs. Shaw shared these thoughts about her family’s experience:

“I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude for FirstHealth Hospice and Palliative Care for the exceptional care they provided to my husband during his final days. Their professionalism, compassion and unwavering dedication brought our family comfort during one of the most difficult times in our lives.

“From the moment we entered their care, every nurse, aide and staff member treated my husband with dignity, respect and gentle kindness. Their team not only ensured that his medical needs were met with excellence but also offered emotional and spiritual support that made a lasting difference for him and our family.

“Even after his passing, FirstHealth didn’t forget us. The follow-up calls, grief resources, and sincere check-ins showed their deep commitment to holistic care – extending far beyond the bedside.

Their support has continued to carry me and my family through the early stages of grief, and for that, we are deeply thankful.

“Thank you, FirstHealth, for the way you cared for my husband—and for how you’ve continued to care for us. Your work is a true ministry of healing, compassion and love.”

Compassionate Care Close to Home

FirstHealth Hospice and Palliative Care is the only not-for-profit organization of its kind in Moore County and most surrounding counties. As part of FirstHealth of the Carolinas, patients and their families receive care regardless of their ability to pay.
