ROCKINGHAM—Diabetes had already touched too many people in Brenda Thomas’ life. So when her own A1C (average blood sugar level) began to rise, the active 76-year-old from Rockingham knew she couldn’t afford to ignore the warning signs.
“I tried making some lifestyle changes on my own,” she said, “But I wasn’t as diligent as I should have been.”
Discovering the Prevent T2 Prediabetes Program
That’s when she came across an ad on social media for Prevent T2, a year-long lifestyle change program offered at no charge through FirstHealth Community Health Services. Designed to help individuals with prediabetes reduce their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, Prevent T2 includes weekly sessions with a lifestyle coach, practical education and incentives that support healthier living.
Thomas was immediately interested.
“I knew right away this was a program I needed if I was really going to change the path I was headed down,” she said.
Lifestyle Changes That Lower Risk of Type 2 Diabetes
She joined Prevent T2 in February 2025, and the results followed. Thomas has lowered her A1C, adopted healthier eating habits and learned how to incorporate more physical activity into her daily routine. But what surprised her most was what she gained beyond the health improvements.
Through the program, Thomas found a close-knit group of fellow participants who quickly became a support system and circle of friends who were guided by Tiffany McLean, MAEd, CHES, a health education specialist with FirstHealth Community Health Services.
When talking about McLean’s impact, Thomas becomes emotional.
“I just can’t describe how awesome Tiffany is,” Thomas said. “She encouraged us and motivated us, lifting us up if we became discouraged. She was our coach, inspirator, encourager, family and friend.”
While Thomas expected to benefit from the education provided through Prevent T2, she didn’t anticipate the additional resources that helped make lifestyle changes more attainable. Program incentives include items such as food scales, a Fitbit to track movement, a membership to FirstHealth Fitness and gas gift cards to help cover transportation expenses.
“Joining Prevent T2 truly changed my life,” Thomas said. “I would encourage anyone at risk for diabetes to take advantage of this program.”
