Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
FirstHealth EMS is a nonprofit service which provides transports for 911 patients in each service’s respective county. With 40 ambulances and 200 employees, the FirstHealth Regional EMS System is one of the largest ambulance systems in North Carolina, covering more than 3,000 square miles.
FirstHealth of the Carolinas currently operates the 911 systems in Chatham, Montgomery, Lee and Richmond counties. We have a mixture of 24/48 hour shifts, and schedules, as well as 12-hour and 8-hour shifts.
Each county is unique but provides a high level of Advanced Life Support (ALS) care to all our patients. Together with our Medical Transport Team, FirstHealth EMS transports approximately 23,000 patients each year to a variety of destinations around the state. If you are interested in joining our team, please fill out an online application.
Pay
FirstHealth of the Carolinas EMS hourly and annual pay is comparable to any service in or around our service areas. We pay hourly wages with anything worked over 40 hours a week at an overtime rate. We also offer evening, night and weekend shift differential, holiday differential, and comparable PTO time (paid time off).
FirstHealth also offers referral bonuses for employees who assist in the recruiting of new staff.
Benefits
FirstHealth offers a wide range of insurance options. From major medical to short- and long-term disability, dental and eye care plans as well as life insurance for you, your family, and more. Learn more.
Education
FirstHealth offers educational reimbursements to assist in you obtaining a degree or increasing your current degree and improving your life’s direction with job advancement. FirstHealth offers, at no cost to the employee, all axillary training such as BLS (CPR), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and both Prehospital Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) and International Trauma Life Support (ITLS).
If you’re an EMT and don’t have time to attend the traditional Paramedic class, FirstHealth EMS has a Paramedic Academy that will get you to the paramedic level and allow you to continue to work. All Academy expenses are covered by FirstHealth.
Protocols
FirstHealth EMS currently operates with aggressive protocols as mandated by our Medical Director to include bypassing local facilities to transport patients directly to a PCI Lab for severe cardiac issues as well as transporting some stroke patients directly to a neurologist.
In most cases, each 911 service transports patients to the closest most appropriate facility that will meet the patient’s needs.
