Personalized procedures to help you achieve lasting results

Types of Weight-Loss Surgery Procedures

We offer two primary weight-loss procedures, along with revisional surgery for patients who need additional support after a previous bariatric procedure.

Procedures We Offer

Gastric Bypass

Limits how much you eat and absorb

Named for Cesar Roux, the surgeon who first described the procedure, Roux-en Y surgery reconfigures parts of the stomach and intestine to resemble a stick Y-shape. It reduces the size of the stomach to a small pouch that holds about one to two ounces of food. Limiting the amount of food you can eat and the number of calories your body can absorb helps achieve dramatic weight-loss while often controlling Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and other health problems. An overnight stay is required for the majority of patients, with discharge usually by noon on the day after surgery. The out-of-work time is a two-week minimum.

Gastric Sleeve

Reduces stomach size to help you feel full faster

Gastric sleeve gastrectomy is a restrictive weight-loss surgery that permanently removes 85 percent of the stomach, leaving it in the shape of a small banana. This means you should feel full quicker than usual. An overnight stay is required for the majority of patients, with discharge usually by noon on the day after surgery. The out-of-work time is a two-week minimum.

Revisional Surgery

An option for patients who previously had weight-loss surgery

For individuals who have previously undergone weight-loss surgery and are facing challenges such as weight regain, insufficient weight loss, anatomic complication, or intolerable gastric reflux disease (GERD), revision surgery may be an option.

Minimally Invasive Weight-Loss Surgery Options

All surgeries at the Metabolic & Weight Management Center are done either laparoscopically or robotically. Both techniques are associated with faster recovery times and better patient outcomes. Read more about each technique below.

Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery is minimally invasive and uses small incisions and the help of a laparoscope, or a thin rod with a camera attached, to see inside the body. Laparoscopic operations are associated with faster recovery times and better patient outcomes. Minimally invasive surgeries and smaller surgical wounds offer benefits such as:

  • Less scarring
  • Less pain and use of pain medication
  • Less blood loss
  • Less risk of infection
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Shorter recovery time

Robotic Surgery

Our surgeons may use a robotic system to aid in bariatric surgeries. The robotic surgical system is operated by the surgeon and allows for more precision and flexibility. A high-definition camera provides greater magnification and guides the surgeon during the procdure. This technique is also considered minimally invasive and offers benefits such as:

  • Less scarring
  • Less pain and use of pain medication
  • Less blood loss
  • Less risk of infection
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Shorter recovery time

Conditions Surgery Can Improve

While bariatric surgery isn't a quick fix, the procedure has proven success in helping patients manage chronic health conditions. For best results, patients are advised to implement a healthy diet, exercise program and to maintain support group attendance, in addition to surgery. If you follow the program successfully, many health conditions may improve, including:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Acid reflux
  • Arthritis
  • Fertility problems
  • Joint and back pain
  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)
  • Liver disease
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
  • Depression and anxiety

What to Expect After Surgery

Your care continues well beyond surgery, with a guided recovery timeline, follow-up visits, and ongoing support designed to help you heal, adjust to lifestyle changes, and build healthy habits that support long-term success.

Two Weeks After Surgery

At two weeks, you will have your first in-office visit with the surgeon and dietitian. You will be weighed and have your incisions checked. Your surgeon will also evaluate your diet and see if it can be advanced.

Four Weeks After Surgery

At four weeks, you will have another in-office visit for a routine checkup. Staff will assess your dietary intake, how your surgical wounds are healing and obtain measurements including body weight, fat mass and circumference around the abdomen and hips.

Three Months After Surgery

On this visit, you will again be seen for the general assessments described above. You may also participate in the group medical visits for added education and support.

Six to Nine Months After Surgery

You will have follow-up visits at the six and nine month mark following surgery. More measurements will be taken, and you will see the dietitian. An optional consultation with the behavioral health coach is also available.

Support Groups and Ongoing Care

Staying connected after surgery can make a meaningful difference in your long-term success. We offer both in-person and virtual support groups, giving you the flexibility to stay connected, share experiences, and receive guidance from our team and other patients.
