Sacral Neuromodulation Therapy

If bladder control problems are interfering with your daily life and other treatments haven't provided enough relief, sacral neuromodulation therapy may be an option.

Sacral neuromodulation, also called sacral nerve stimulation, is a treatment for certain bladder conditions, including overactive bladder, urinary incontinence and urinary retention.

What is Sacral Neuromodulation?

Sacral neuromodulation uses gentle electrical nerve stimulation to help improve communication between your brain, bladder and bowel.

A small device sends mild electrical impulses to the sacral nerves, which help control bladder function. By improving these nerve signals, the therapy may reduce symptoms such as urinary urgency, frequent urination, leakage or difficulty emptying the bladder.

Who is a Candidate?

Sacral neuromodulation may be an option if you've tried:

  • Medications and other treatment options
  • Basic lifestyle changes
  • Chronic bladder or bowel control problems

Your FirstHealth urogynecology provider can evaluate your symptoms and help determine whether sacral neuromodulation is right for you.

How Does Sacral Neuromodulation Work?

Your brain and bladder rely on nerve signals to communicate. When these signals aren't working as they should, you may experience symptoms such as urinary urgency, frequent urination, leakage or difficulty emptying your bladder.

Sacral neuromodulation uses a small device to deliver gentle stimulation to the nerves that help control bladder function. This stimulation can help improve communication between the brain, bladder and bowel and reduce symptoms.

Before receiving a permanent stimulator, there will be a test period during which we evaluate for an appropriate response to therapy. If your symptoms improve during a trial period, you and your provider can discuss moving forward with the implanted device.
