How do we treat lung cancer?

Patients dealing with lung cancer are treated through the Chest Center of the Carolinas, which brings together the expertise of multiple specialties in the treatment of diseases of the chest, particularly lung cancer. The center assists patients in their treatment plan by minimizing visits and providing the most advanced care possible. The Chest Center of the Carolinas is housed in the new state-of-the art FirstHealth Cancer Center.

Minimally invasive ways to treat COPD and emphysema

FirstHealth offers the Zephyr Valve procedure and the Spiration Valve System procedure to treat adults dealing with severe COPD or emphysema.

The Zephyr valves are small, one-way valves placed in selected airways during a bronchoscopy procedure to help patients breathe easier. Generally, candidates for the Zephyr procedure are patients who:

  • Have a confirmed diagnosis of severe COPD or emphysema
  • Must stop to catch their breath often, even when taking prescribed medications
  • Have reduced lung function
  • Have stopped smoking for 4 months or longer

The SVS procedure includes an umbrella-shaped device that is placed in targeted airways of the lung during a lung volume reduction procedure. The SVS redirects air from diseased parts of the lung to healthier parts, allowing the tissue to expand and function more effectively. I
