Hospice began in the late 1960s as a volunteer movement, and volunteers are still integral to its success. Our volunteers provide practical and emotional support for community members nearing the end of life.
What do Hospice volunteers do?
Hospice volunteers serve in a variety of meaningful ways that meet their interests and schedules, including:
- Offering Companionship: Spend time with patients through conversation, reading, music, or simply being present.
- Supporting Families: Provide emotional and practical support and respite for caregivers who need a moment to rest, reflect or just run an errand.
- Sharing Special Talents: Use your gifts—like music or art—to bring joy and peace.
- Participating in Bereavement Support: Some volunteers help with grief groups or follow-up calls to families.
- Helping Behind the Scenes: Assist with administrative tasks, prepare care materials or tend our gardens.
No medical experience is needed—just a compassionate heart and a willingness to serve.

- Make a Real Impact: Your time and care can bring peace and comfort when it’s needed most.
Volunteering with Veterans
With our close proximity to Ft. Bragg, FirstHealth Hospice has many veterans in our care. We particularly need veterans or active-duty soldiers to serve as hospice volunteers. These volunteers have the unique ability to relate to and connect with veteran patients, creating a safe environment for reflection, healing and an enhanced quality of life.
Hospice Volunteer Training
Before meeting with patients, all hospice volunteers complete a comprehensive training program designed to prepare them for the sensitive and meaningful work ahead. This training typically includes education on the philosophy of hospice care, effective communication skills, active listening, patient confidentiality, cultural sensitivity, and understanding the emotional, physical, and spiritual needs of those at the end of life.
Volunteers also learn how to support grieving families and how to care for themselves emotionally while serving others. The training ensures that every volunteer feels confident, compassionate, and well-equipped to provide comfort and companionship in a respectful and supportive way
