Brain Tumors

FirstHealth of the Carolinas offers brain cancer treatment, including chemotherapy, oral chemotherapy, radiation therapy, intensity modulated radiation therapy and more.

Comprehensive Care

A brain tumor develops when cells grow uncontrollably in the brain. The term brain cancer usually refers to malignant tumors. Brain cancers are unlikely to spread outside the brain. A benign brain tumor also does not spread, but it can continue to grow and press structures near it, causing symptoms. There are two main types of brain cancer:

  • Primary brain tumor: This cancer begins in the brain. It can be either malignant or benign. A small benign tumor in a bad location can cause significant problems.
  • Secondary or metastatic brain tumor: This cancer has spread to the brain from another site in the body. All metastatic tumors are malignant

FirstHealth offers brain cancer treatment using a cancer treatment team of specialists. FirstHealth has a highly qualified team of neurosurgeons on staff for brain and spinal tumors.

Medical oncologists use chemotherapy, including oral chemotherapy, biologic therapy and monoclonal antibody therapy. Radiation oncologists deliver radiation treatments using 3D planning, intensity modulated radiation therapy and stereotactic radiosurgery with image guidance round out the treatment team for brain tumors.

Our brain cancer specialty team provides the patient and caregivers with information, resources and consultation on brain cancer and the types of treatment available. We provide effective brain cancer treatment at our cancer center on the FirstHealth Moore Regional campus in Pinehurst.
