Amina Moghul, D.O., joins FirstHealth Family Medicine-Seven Lakes

PINEHURST - Amina Moghul, D.O., brings a wealth of experience as a military physician to her new role at FirstHealth Family Medicine-Seven Lakes. She is grateful for her time in the U.S. Army, where she worked at Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii and the United States Military Academy. "I am very proud of my service and so thankful to the other men and women who served," Moghul says. "Being in the Army further taught me the value of selfless service, something I hope to continue to exude as a physician at FirstHealth."

Moghul comes to the Sandhills well-prepared after a number of progressively responsible roles in the military. She completed her internship and residency in Family Medicine at Tripler Army Medical Center, where she also served as chief resident in 2014 and 2015. As a staff family physician, Moghul cared for more than 1,000 patients, from newborns to seniors. She also served on the faculty of Tripler's Family Medicine Residency program, educating medical students, residents and physician assistants. "In that role, I was teaching and molding new physicians and medical students to be the ideal family doctor," Moghul says. "That included addressing social and psychological needs and barriers to care, rather than just the problem the patient mentioned." Moghul also taught and practiced in medical office procedures, which required her to stay up-to-date on the latest advancements in patient care.

In 2016, Moghul joined the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y., as Medical Director of the Cadet Health Clinic. She supervised 24 staff members and provided oversight of daily operations at the clinic, which provided care for more than 4,700 cadets. "I continued to care for patients, but was also responsible for the administrative side of delivering health care," says Moghul. "I've had the chance to see health care from the administrative perspective as well as the physician's perspective. I feel empowered to communicate with other leaders in care delivery at FirstHealth about how we can make health care better for our patients."

At FirstHealth, Moghul looks forward to the opportunity to develop deeper, long-term relationships with her patients. "Military medicine is wonderful, but I found myself missing so many patients and families I cared for who had to relocate due to their military obligations," says Moghul. "I hope to have the opportunity to see my younger patients grow and help adult patients with their various health care needs in the long run."

A relationship-based approach to patient care guides Moghul in her daily practice. "It's my job to meet the patient where they are," Moghul says. "My approach isn't problem-based care, but rather person-based care. The best results come from treating the whole patient--mind, body and spirit. I want to have an intimate understanding of the patient and their family, so I can best help them break down the barriers to reaching their health care goals." Prevention of health problems is also important, Moghul says. "Prevention really is the best medicine. If we can beat a problem before it starts, that's always best. If we can control a problem once it starts, that's a good thing, as well."

Moghul grew up outside New York City, earned bachelor's degrees in biology and journalism from Rutgers University, and attended medical school at Rowan University. In addition to reading good fiction, Moghul enjoys spending time with her husband and two young daughters, hiking, camping and cycling. "I love the South and I'm so thrilled to be in the Sandhills," Moghul says. "I have many friends who work at FirstHealth who encouraged me to work here. Best of all, I can continue to care for patients of all ages, including the many military families who have chosen to make the Sandhills their home."
