ROCKINGHAM-- Surgical procedures for cataracts are now offered close to home for patients in Richmond County at Moore Regional Hospital (MRH)-Richmond.

Cataract surgery patients can obtain pre- and post-surgical care with their established eye care provider.
Cataracts are a clouding of the eye lens, which causes an overall blurring and haziness of vision. Objects appear to be out of focus, and cataract patients tend to be sensitive to bright lights and glare.
At MRH-Richmond, Anna Fakadej, M.D., FACS, FAAO, of Carolina Eye performs traditional surgery to remove cataracts and restore normal vision. A small instrument breaks up the cloudy lens using ultrasound, and a new lens is inserted.
Patients with cataracts and glaucoma may be candidates for an additional procedure at the time of surgery, also available at MRH-Richmond. The Glaukos iStent Inject can help lower eye pressure and decrease the amount of eye drops patients must use on a regular basis to treat glaucoma. A small device implanted during cataract surgery helps increase the flow of fluid through the eye with the goal of decreasing pressure.
Dr. Fakadej also offers Superficial Keratectomy at MRH-Richmond. This procedure smooths irregularities or bumps some patients have in the cornea due to long-term dryness, improving the accuracy of eye measurements taken before cataract surgery.
Dr. Fakadej is a specialist in refractive cataract surgery. She completed her internship and residency in ophthalmology at the University of Rochester and received a medical degree from West Virginia University. Dr. Fakadej is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and American College of Surgeons.
