his residency in Emergency Medicine at University Hospitals in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Goals Of This Live Activity
Ensure compliance with EMTALA.
Program Objectives
A. Recognize the issues that must be addressed through hospital-wide policies,
procedures, and education in order for the administrative, nursing, and medical
staff leadership to ensure the hospital complies with EMTALA. Identify key issues
related to EMTALA that need to be included in implementation and practice.

B. Differentiate the legal duties related to medical screening (including the scope
of the screening exam), stabilizing treatment, and transfer of ED patients.

C. Identify the legal requirements related to providing on-call physician services
for the ED or the inpatient setting, and recognize the legal duties related to
transfers and the acceptance of patients in transfer from other hospitals.

D. Recommend methods to enhance compliance with EMTALA, minimize potential
risks and liability, and improve patient care.

Target Audience
Medical Staff leaders, individual members of the Medical Staff (particularly
those who take call in the Emergency Departments), Administration, Nursing
Leadership, physicians using telemedicine, and those treating Psychiatric and
Behavioral Health Patients in the ED.

Gap To Be Filled
Lack of most current knowledge for competence, performance and outcomes
to comply with the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA).
