FirstHealth’s Clinical Pastoral Education Program Receives Reaccreditation

| Date Posted: 9/9/2018

PINEHURST – The Clinical Pastoral Education Training Program at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital (MRH) has been granted full accreditation by the Commission for Pastoral and Psychotherapy Training (CAPPT).

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is specialized training for people of all faiths who want to work in the ministry of hospital chaplaincy. The program at MRH teaches chaplains how to address the unique spiritual and religious needs of patients and families coping with a medical crisis. Accreditation from CAPPT acknowledges the strength and quality of the program.

“We are extremely proud of all involved who shared in this reaccreditation process,” says Rev. Dr. Beverly Jessup, clinical director of FirstHealth Pastoral Care. “We look forward to continuing to be a place where clergy professionals, military chaplains, qualified lay persons and seminarians can receive recognized accredited CPE.”

A successful CAPPT accreditation assures trainees and potential employers that the training program meets the most rigorous standards of the profession.

MRH was accredited in 2004, 2011 and now again in 2018 for another full seven years.

“We could not have completed this reaccreditation process without the support of FirstHealth administration, our Pastoral Care Department team and all of our trainees,” adds Jessup.

The CPE program is part of the FirstHealth Pastoral Care program which provides pastoral care services to all FirstHealth hospitals – MRH in Pinehurst, MRH – Hoke in Raeford, MRH – Richmond in Rockingham and Montgomery Memorial Hospital in Troy. Since it began in 2004, the CPE program has served 190 ministers.

The Pastoral Care program’s volunteer chaplains provide pastoral care visits as well as receiving hundreds of prayer requests, and conducts weekly prayer services, memorial services, support group meetings, and special Hanukkah, Advent, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday worship services.

Pastoral Care assistance is available around the clock at FirstHealth for all staff, patients and family members. Patients and family members or visitors may call directly at (910) 715-1092, or your physician or nurse can request a visit or set up an appointment for supportive pastoral counseling or spiritual pain assessment by a chaplain.
