PEMBROKE – Scott J. Denardo, M.D., with FirstHealth Cardiology, is now offering appointments in Pembroke.

A seasoned interventional cardiologist, Dr. Denardo returned to the Sandhills area in 2017 after spending 10 years pursuing research goals at the University of Florida and Duke University.

Dr. Denardo spent more than thirteen years with the cardiology program at Pinehurst Medical Clinic and provided interventional services at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst before joining the teaching and research faculty as an assistant professor of medicine with the University of Florida. In 2010, he joined the teaching and research faculty at Duke University Medical Center as an associate professor of medicine, providing cardiovascular care and student mentoring services with the Duke Cardiology program at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton.

“I am extremely excited to return to the Robeson County area to help provide relatively advanced cardiovascular services to a rural and underserved area,” says Dr. Denardo. “Also, the proximity of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke adds a positive and unique element to this area.”

“I learned much about Pembroke during my time working for Duke Cardiology of Lumberton, and was provided the opportunity to deliver patient care for Robeson and surrounding counties. The area has a rich history; it's an honor to serve here. Plus, I hope to reconnect with my old patients,” he adds.

Dr. Denardo will provide non-invasive cardiovascular studies beyond electrocardiograms, such as echocardiograms and standard stress tests at his new location in Pembroke. Nuclear stress tests, invasive and interventional procedures, including angioplasty and stent placement, will be performed by Dr. Denardo at Scotland Memorial Hospital in Laurinburg.

A native of California, Dr. Denardo received a double-major B.A. in physics and applied mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley, and his M.D. from the University of California at San Francisco.

He completed his internship and residency at UCLA and a fellowship in general cardiology at the University of California at San Francisco before completing a fellowship in interventional cardiology at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in La Jolla, California.

He has also contributed research papers on various topics related to general and interventional cardiology to numerous medical journals.

A Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions and the American College of Physicians, Dr. Denardo is also a founding member of the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography and a member of the American Medical Association.
