PINEHURST – FirstHealth Diabetes & Nutrition Education has the area’s only American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE), and the recent AADE certification of two members of the FirstHealth staff brings the program’s number to four.

AADE is a professional membership organization dedicated to improving diabetes care through education, management and support. Its more than 14,000 professional members include nurses, dietitians, pharmacists and exercise specialists who work with people who have, are affected by or are at risk for diabetes.

FirstHealth’s two recently AADE-certified diabetes educators are Doretta Wright, M.S., R.D., and Scott Crow, Ph.D., R.D., LDN. The two diabetes educators who had previously earned AADE certification are Melissa Herman, R.D., LDN, CDE, and Michelle Cole, R.D., LDN, CDE.

Wright received a B.S. in applied nutrition with a minor in sports science from N.C. State University and her M.S. in nutrition and food science from Meredith College.

Dr. Crow earned a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from the University of Connecticut, a master’s degree in monogastric nutrition from the University of Missouri and his Ph.D., also in monogastric nutrition, from N.C. State University.

To be eligible for the AADE certification exam, both had to have two years of experience as a dietitian and have completed 1,000 hours of face-to-face nutrition counseling (individual appointments or group classes).

FirstHealth Diabetes & Nutrition Education offers counseling for individuals with specific medical needs as well as those who wish to maintain the best of health. For more information on the program and the services it provides, call (800) 213-3284 or visit www.firsthealth.org/diabetes.
