PINEHURST – Heart, breast and bone health are among the most-discussed women’s health topics of today, and each will be highlighted during the upcoming “Girl Talk” program hosted by FirstHealth of the Carolinas.

Scheduled for Saturday, April 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Clara McLean House (located at 20 FirstVillage Drive, across Memorial Drive from FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital), the program will give women of all ages the opportunity to learn more about these and other health topics of special interest to them. The event will include lunch provided by Rhett’s Catering.

Christa D’Ostroph, R.D., a registered dietitian with FirstHealth’s Cardiac Rehab program, and Kelly Godwin, PLDN, of FirstHealth Diabetes & Nutrition Education, will open the day’s discussion at 10:15 a.m. with information about weight-management and heart health for women.

“I will be discussing the best eating patterns and recommended food choices to protect the heart,” D’Ostroph says, “and sharing information on the new ‘Dietary Guidelines for Americans’ advice for good nutrition.”

Godwin will present healthy tips for weight-loss and weight maintenance. “I will cover a variety of foods from all food groups,” she says, “but focus on nutrient-dense foods and utilizing lean protein and healthy fats for feeling full after eating.”

The morning’s sessions will continue with a discussion focusing on bone and breast health led by Tina LaForge, RT(R)(M), mammography supervisor with FirstHealth Imaging, who will begin by sharing information on bone density exams and what to expect from them.

She will also touch on the role nutrition plays in both bone and breast health before concluding with information on breast density and its relationship to changes in the way mammography results are now being reported.

A cooking demonstration presented by Ashley Carpenter, R.D., a registered dietitian with FirstHealth Fitness-Pinehurst, will conclude the event’s morning sessions.

Following a noon lunch break, the information sessions will continue with a yoga demonstration, presented by Cinnamon LeBlanc, of FirstHealth Fitness-Southern Pines; and information on menopause and thyroid health, provided by Southern Pines Women’s Health center, a FirstHealth clinic.

The day’s activities will conclude with a presentation on memory health provided by Jennifer Pollard, MSW, of Aging Outreach Services, followed by tours of the Clara McLean House Healing Garden.

The “Girl Talk” program is free and open to the public, but space is limited and registration is required by April 15. To register, call (800) 213-3284 or click here.
