PINEHURST – FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital has once again been recognized as one of the state’s best hospitals and as the top hospital in patient satisfaction by Business North Carolina magazine.

Moore Regional ranked No. 8 in the “best hospital” ranking and No. 1 in the “patient picks” list.

“We are very pleased to once again be recognized by Business North Carolina magazine as one of the best hospitals in North Carolina,” says David J. Kilarski, chief executive officer for FirstHealth of the Carolinas.  “We are especially proud to be named the No. 1 hospital in the state for patient satisfaction.  This outstanding achievement is an affirmation of the hard work of our physicians, nurses and ancillary health care professionals in providing the best care possible to our patients.  We take great pride in our team’s accomplishments and in its dedication to caring for our patients and their families.”

Business North Carolina’s annual list of the state’s best hospitals ranks all adult, acute-care medical centers with 50 or more beds.  The rankings identify hospitals that excel in areas including patient satisfaction, safety and readmission, and death rates for common conditions and procedures.  The list is primarily calculated using data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid, along with other criteria from Blue Cross and Blue Shield, U.S. News & World Report and The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit that advocates for hospital quality and safety.

“I am especially proud of the two FirstHealth hospitals, Moore Regional-Hoke Campus and Richmond Memorial, that are divisions of the flagship Moore Regional, because they share in this recognition,” says Kilarski.

“Patient picks” rankings are based on the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey that is given to hospital patients between 48 hours and six weeks of discharge as required by the Centers of Medicare & Medicaid.  The survey is the first national, standardized, publicly reported survey of patients' perspectives of hospital care. Top “patient picks” are based on the percentage of patients who would recommend the hospital to others.

FirstHealth ranked No. 1 in the state with a score of 85 percent. The average state-wide score is 71 percent.

“FirstHealth is honored to be recognized among the best hospitals in the state,” says John Krahnert Jr., M.D., FirstHealth’s chief medical officer. “Our team continues to be recognized as a top performer in patient satisfaction, quality and safety year after year. These latest achievements as noted by Business North Carolina come on the heels of Moore Regional’s recognition by Truven Health Analytics as a 100 Top Hospital in the nation and Reid Heart Center’s recognition as a Top 50 cardiovascular hospital.”

The Business North Carolina story also noted Moore Regional Hospital’s recognition by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina as a “cutting-edge hospital” for quality and expertise in cardiac care.

“As a cardiothoracic surgeon, I am keenly aware of the rigorous quality and safety measures that are involved with the delivery of high-quality cardiac medicine,” says Dr. Krahnert.  “Moore Regional’s Reid Heart Center is committed to the continued delivery of compassionate patient care supported by the latest technology and clinical expertise.  Our physicians and surgeons have a proven track record for excellence, which makes FirstHealth a leader in our region.”

Also noted in the Business North Carolina story was Moore Regional’s commendation as a U.S. News & World Report “top-performing hospital” in the following adult specialties: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, heart bypass surgery, heart failure, knee replacement and pulmonology.
