SANFORD – FirstHealth of the Carolinas has added a third convenient care location to its network of community health care offices with the January 2017 opening of FirstHealth Convenient Care in Sanford.

The office is located at 1602 Westover Drive in Sanford (off US 1 near Davison’s Steaks) and began accepting walk-in patients on Monday, Jan. 2. Hours will be 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week.

“We are excited to expand our health care services in Lee County,” says Dan Barnes, D.O., president of FirstHealth Physician Group.  “Our convenient care clinics have been well-received in Moore and Richmond counties, and we hope for the same in Lee County.  Considering health care trends and patient needs, we believe access to more non-emergent care would be a great benefit for Lee County residents, especially those looking for access to the FirstHealth system.”

The Sanford Convenient Care office will serve adults and children with non-emergency medical needs including such ailments as upper respiratory infection, strep, mild asthma, flu and urinary tract infection as well as minor injuries such as cuts, burns and broken bones that have not broken the skin.

Imaging services, immunizations and sports physicals will also be among the various services offered by physician assistants Kara Gehan, PA-C, and Leah Wills, PA-C.

Gehan, who received her physician assistant training at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, completed a physician assistant fellowship in emergency medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Wills received her physician assistant training at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Both are physician assistant-certified.

James Liffrig, M.D., is medical director of the FirstHealth Convenient Care program, which also serves the Whispering Pines and Rockingham communities.

“The FirstHealth Convenient Care offices provide the communities they serve with easy access to services that fall between the needs of a true emergency – one that requires an emergency room visit – and the preventive care of a primary care provider,” Dr. Liffrig says. “With the additional availability of the ancillary services of imaging and lab, our Convenient Care patients have a ‘one-stop option’ for care provided by a professional medical staff that specializes in unscheduled urgent care.”
