Former Air Force Psychiatrist Joins FirstHealth Behavioral Health

PINEHURST – When Corinne S. Medina, M.D., was in medical school, she participated in the usual rotation of medical specialties, but the one with the greatest impact for her was psychiatry.
“I loved several specialties, but only psychiatry was interesting every day,” she says. “It is the last true frontier of medicine. We are learning new and groundbreaking things about the mind/brain every day. One of my medical school professors said that we have learned more in the past 50 years about the brain then we knew in the 500 years before. I truly believe that we will look back and see this as a pivotal time in mankind’s understanding of the brain.”
Dr. Medina recently joined FirstHealth Behavioral Health Services as a staff psychiatrist.
A native of Pennsylvania, Dr. Medina earned her medical degree from the Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia before completing her internship and residency in psychiatry at the Wright State Boonshoft School of Medicine in Dayton, Ohio.
She spent two years as a psychiatrist with the 1st Special Operations Medical Group and was previously a psychiatrist with the 81st Medical Operations Group. Both positions provided her with a variety of professional experiences.
“I truly enjoyed my time in the service,” she says. “I was fortunate enough to work for Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC), where I gained an appreciation for the incredible things that U.S. Special Operations personnel are able to do. Through AFSOC, I learned to focus on the individual’s strengths. Just like the physical body, the mind can be exercised to become resilient and excel under circumstances that would have otherwise been extremely difficult.”
She says her FirstHealth practice will focus on that mental resilience.
“I am interested in therapeutic ways to enhance the mind’s performance,” she says. “The mind is capable of amazing feats. I am interested in ways to improve resilience and have people excel when faced with stressful events.”
Dr. Medina, who is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology, says she is happy to be part of the FirstHealth team.
“All of the staff at FirstHealth has been excellent to work with and incredibly nice,” she says. “I look forward to caring for the FirstHealth community.”
