RAEFORD – When John H. Brooks was in the seventh grade, his uncle, a family practice physician, loaned him a model of the heart to use in a science project. John H. Brooks, M.D., now cites that long-ago episode as a starting point for his professional direction.
“That spurred my interest in the heart at an early age,” he says.
As a new member of the FirstHealth Cardiology team, Dr. Brooks sees patients four days a week in Hoke County at FirstHealth Cardiology, Physician Offices and Specialty Center, 6322 Fayetteville Road in Raeford, and one day a week in Scotland County at FirstHealth Cardiology, 1705-A Berwick Drive in Laurinburg.
His practice covers the range of non-interventional cardiology care including all forms of stress testing, nuclear cardiology, echocardiography (including transesophageal echocardiograpy), electrical cardioversion and clinical care/management of coronary artery disease (CAD), congestive heart failure and valvular heart disease as well as basic rhythm management (including atrial fibrillation).
“The diversity of procedures and imaging in cardiology was attractive to me,” he says. “I enjoy it.”
The son of a longtime Pembroke pharmacist, Dr. Brooks actually began his professional life in pharmacy, returning to his hometown to work alongside his father for a couple of years after first earning a B.S. degree in chemistry from Davidson College and then his B.S. in pharmacy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He continues to maintain his North Carolina pharmacy licensure.
Dr. Brooks later entered the School of Medicine at East Carolina University, where he earned his M.D. in 2002. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina.
Before joining FirstHealth, Dr. Brooks was associated with Vidant Cardiology in Greenville, a cardiology practice managed by Vidant Medical Group, and had served as a clinical assistant professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Services at the Brody School of Medicine. He is board certified in both cardiovascular disease and internal medicine.
Dr. Brooks and his wife, Angie, a Duke University-trained physician assistant, have three children – Peyton, 12; Mason (Macy), 10; and Brandan, 7 – and classify themselves as “die-hard Tar Heel fans.”
