RAEFORD – When Zena Kobaissi, PA-C, was an undergraduate microbiology student at Marshall University and also working in a local Autism Services Center, she made an observation that would prove life-changing.
She saw that the center’s clients weren’t always getting the health care they needed and, because they weren’t as healthy as they should be, they weren’t happy.
“Before the end of the school year, I decided to stop my microbiology job search and join a physician assistant program so I could continue to be one on one with patients and make an even bigger difference on their lives,” says Kobaissi, who has joined the health care team at FirstHealth Family Medicine-Teal Drive in Raeford. “Improved health means improved quality of life.”
Kobaissi, who works primarily with Teal Drive walk-in patients, believes that patients who have an established relationship with a primary care provider are more likely to have better outcomes than those who don’t when illness strikes.
“I like to make sure patients are being followed closely for chronic illnesses,” she says. “I like them to be comfortable enough to come to me as their primary care provider for their acute illnesses, and I like to make sure their health is in good shape to reduce the risk of any acute illnesses arising or chronic ones worsening.”
After receiving her bachelor’s degree in microbiology from Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, Kobaissi earned a bachelor and master in health science with a physician assistant major from Mountain State University in Beckley, West Virginia.
She began her health care career in express and urgent care medicine and was affiliated with Goshen Medical Center, a provider of urgent care and family medicine, in Clinton, North Carolina, before joining FirstHealth.
A certified and licensed physician assistant, Kobaissi will join a health care team at FirstHealth Family Medicine-Teal Drive that also includes Marcus Lowry, M.D.; Robert G. Townsend III, D.O.; Michael D. Nissen, FNP and Tricia Reich, FNP.
