Richmond County Teens Participate in RMH Volunteer Program

ROCKINGHAM – FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital hosted a record number of 11 area teenagers from June 26 to July 31 for its summer 2015 Teen Volunteer Program.
The group included newcomers Adam Tatum, Destiney Moss, Emily Duckworth, Faith Baxley, Faith Locklear, Janet Copeland, Jerry Leigh Goodwin, Rebekah Chambers, and sisters Mikhaila and Skylar Hudson as well as Gloria Frye, returning for her third year.
The teens contributed a total of 631.5 hours over the five-week program. Each was assigned a department each week and, when needed, occasionally took on extra hours.
They were introduced to a variety of departments including Pharmacy, Imaging, Wound Care, Sterile Processing, Med/Surg nursing, Outpatient Surgery, Outpatient Registration, Purchasing/Receiving, Food & Nutrition, Physical Therapy/Rehab department and two new departments – Cardiopulmonary Rehab and Transition Care Clinic.
“I feel it is important for the teens to experience how all the different departments work together to make the hospital run smoothly,” says the hospital’s Volunteer Services manager, Mandy Shepard. “This year, we had a fantastic group of young people. Each and every one of them was so helpful and ready for new assignments, learning as much as possible. Most years, you might have one or two teens that especially stand out above the rest, but this year all of them shone.”
