Researcher Says 3,500 Calorie Rule For Weight Loss Is A Myth.

The Washington Post and “Wonkblog” report that a “popular rule” stating that “for every 3,500 calories you shed from your diet, you’ll lose a pound,” is actually “a total myth.”
Kevin Hall, a researcher at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, has “in many ways, spearheaded the movement to shed the nutrition world of the 3,500 calorie rule,” the Post adds. In 2011, Hall created the Body Weight Planner, a tool that approximated metabolic changes in individuals seeking to lose weight. Using the tool, Hall was able to demonstrate “how greatly the 3,500 calorie rule overestimates weight loss,” the article reports.
