Thwaites Named FirstHealth Back & Neck Pain Medical Director

PINEHURST – Brian K. Thwaites, M.D., has been named medical director of the FirstHealth Back & Neck Pain program.
Services are offered at FirstHealth Back & Neck Pain offices in Pinehurst (Specialty Centers Building, 35 Memorial Drive), Sanford (Carolina Eye Associates Building, 1227 Carthage St.) and Raeford (FirstHealth building in front of Walmart, 4565 Fayetteville Road).
Dr. Thwaites earned his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School in Illinois. He completed his internship at Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii and his residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
Board certified in both anesthesiology and pain management, he has been with Pinehurst Anesthesia Associates and FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital for 19 years.
Each of the eight board certified physicians with FirstHealth Back & Neck Pain has specific training and experience in pain management, and all are associated with Pinehurst Anesthesia Associates. The program serves as a central point of contact and coordination for patients who need to see different medical specialists or therapists.
Depending on the cause and severity of the individual patient’s pain, the program’s physicians can provide prescription medications; steroid injections; pain medication injections to muscles, joints and “trigger points”; selective nerve root blocks; neurostimulation; radiofrequency interruption of nerve connections in joints between the vertebrae in the spine; and electrothermal therapy.
