ROCKINGHAM – A hospitalist physician known for his “great bedside manner” has been named 2015 Physician of the Year at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital
Van “Beaux” Slaughter, M.D., says he was “caught completely off guard” by the honor.
“I am completely humbled,” Dr. Slaughter says, “and give all the credit to the team I work with. From the Emergency Department registration to the nurses, nurse assistants and Housekeeping, from the nurse practitioners and physician assistants to the wonderful consultants, I am lucky to be a part of the Richmond team.”
Staff letters supporting Dr. Slaughter’s nomination for the award noted the way he communicates with his patients and their comfort with him.
“Dr. Slaughter is very compassionate with patients and families,” one letter said. “He explains tests and procedures in a way patients can understand, and he always has a warm and friendly attitude.”
Other nomination letters pointed out how he supports the entire Richmond Memorial health care team, educating nurses about procedures and medications and collaborating with other providers.
“Dr. Slaughter is a wonderful asset to Richmond Memorial’s health care team,” says hospital President John Jackson. “He’s an incredible leader and a compassionate physician who works well with everyone and is dedicated to his work. He’s in the hospital day and night – whenever he is needed. This award is well-deserved.”
Dr. Slaughter earned his medical degree from the American University of the Caribbean in St. Maarten and completed his internship and residency at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, North Carolina. He joined FirstHealth’s hospitalist program immediately following his residency.
Board certified in both internal medicine and hospice and palliative care, Dr. Slaughter serves as chief of the Medical Staff for FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital (comprising the Richmond, Moore and Hoke campuses) and as director of Hospitalist Regional Services for the FirstHealth Physician Group. In addition to his work as a hospitalist physician, he is also a member of the team that provides physician coverage for FirstHealth Hospice & Palliative Care in Pinehurst.
Dr. Slaughter is married and the father of three daughters.
