VASS – Early in Kathleen Prussian’s professional life, she taught math and coached swimming and track in a North Carolina high school. She later taught in an alternative school for pregnant teens and teenage mothers.
Along the way, she developed an interest in health issues in rural North Carolina with a different profession in mind.
In May, Prussian will achieve a longtime goal of returning to family practice as a nurse practitioner in a community-based setting when she joins FirstHealth Family Medicine in Vass. A nurse practitioner in various locations since 2006, she will provide health care for all generations – from infants to senior citizens – in the FirstHealth clinic.
She replaces Christine Cowell, PA-C, who has relocated to FirstHealth Family Medicine-Troy, in order to be closer to her home in Star.
“I am excited to practice with FirstHealth in the Vass area,” Prussian says.
Prussian earned her B.S. degree in education from Bowling Green University in Ohio and her B.S. degree in nursing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While working toward her M.S. degree in nursing from UNC, she drew from her experience as a Cardiac Rehab exercise leader and a registered nurse in a hospital telemetry unit to prepare for her master’s thesis on “Racial and Ethnic Differences in the Presentation of Metabolic Syndrome” with its focus on the multiple risk factors that contribute to heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
She has also worked in pediatrics and primary care and was employed as a nurse practitioner with Highland Neurology in Fayetteville before joining FirstHealth.
FirstHealth Family Care-Vass is located at 3349 US 1 in Vass. To make an appointment with Kathleen Prussian, FNP, call (910) 245-7678.
