PEMBROKE – Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States, but it often goes undiagnosed in many of its victims.

In an upcoming educational program hosted by FirstHealth of the Carolinas, interventional cardiologist William Harris, M.D., will discuss “Heart Disease: Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment.” The program will be held Wednesday, March 18, at 5:30 p.m. at the UNC-Pembroke Regional Center, COMTech Park, 49 Livermore Drive, Pembroke, and is free and open to the public.

A native of Pembroke, Dr. Harris earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where he received his medical degree from the UNC School of Medicine in 2006. After completing a residency in internal medicine at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in 2009, he spent a year with the Moore Regional Hospitalist Service before entering the East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine in Greenville for fellowships in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology.

Board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease, Dr. Harris offers weekly appointments in Pembroke.

“People who have heart disease sometimes don’t know it, because they don’t have any obvious symptoms,” says Dr. Harris. “As a result, they don’t take preventive measures, such as taking proper medications, being physically active or eating a healthy diet. There are many tests that can help us determine if a patient has heart disease or is at high risk for heart disease, and there are many treatments for heart disease. In my upcoming program, we’ll be talking about heart disease and how patients and their physicians can partner to prevent or treat what can be a ‘silent killer.’”
