PINEHURST, N.C. – FirstHealth of the Carolinas has announced that F. Craig Humphrey will serve as the president of FirstCarolinaCare Insurance Company. FirstCarolinaCare Insurance Company (FCCI), a wholly owned subsidiary of FirstHealth of the Carolinas, is the only hospital-owned not-for-profit insurance company in North Carolina.
Prior to being named president, Humphrey served as the interim president of FirstCarolinaCare and previously as its chief operating officer. He has been with FirstCarolinaCare since 1999.
“Craig was the natural choice to take the lead for FirstCarolinaCare,” said David J. Kilarski, CEO of FirstHealth of the Carolinas. “He has extensive experience in the insurance industry and has demonstrated exceptional leadership over the past five months as interim president. Most recently, he led a very successful campaign effort to enroll a record number of Medicare Advantage beneficiaries into the FirstMedicare Direct program.”
As the president, Humphrey is directly responsible for managing the relationships and obtaining the required results with all of FirstCarolinaCare’s business lines including group insurance coverage and the Medicare Advantage product.
He is also responsible for managing the internal operational processes, which include enrollment, auditing, claims review, COBRA, customer service, information technology and reporting, underwriting, strategic planning and assisting with client relationship management.
According to FirstCarolinaCare Board Chair Lowell Simon, Humphrey’s appointment is effective immediately. “I am proud to say the Executive Committee of FirstCarolinaCare fully endorsed Craig’s promotion to president,” said Simon.
“He knows this business and will lead the organization effectively during the fast-changing times in the health insurance industry.”
Prior to joining FirstCarolinaCare, Humphrey worked for Foundation Health Plans of Florida, PCA Health Plan of Florida, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans in Georgia and Virginia. He has a total of 28 years of health insurance/managed care operations experience.
A native Tar Heel, Humphrey grew up in Elon and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Relations from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
