PINEHURST – With an acronym for almost every critical phrase and terms that can be almost foreign-sounding, any discussion of health care can be complicated – especially for lay consumers with no background in the subject beyond their own medical experiences.

Transition care, medical home, advance directives – the average health care consumer is constantly bombarded by medical terms and acronyms, rules and regulations related to what is covered by insurance and what isn’t, questions about Medicare Advantage and so on.

An upcoming program hosted by The Foundation of FirstHealth will attempt to remove some of the confusion from the local discussion.

“The ABCs of Health Care” will be held Wednesday, Nov. 12, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Owens Auditorium on the campus of Sandhills Community College. A panel of FirstHealth health care professionals will discuss, define and present in everyday terms some of the leading health care terms and phrases of the day.

“Anyone who is essentially unfamiliar with the health care environment and its accompanying jargon and acronyms easily finds himself completely confused,” says panel member John Krahnert Jr., M.D., chief medical officer of FirstHealth of the Carolinas.

Moderated by David Christaldi, past chair of The Foundation of FirstHealth Board of Trustees, the panel will include the following: Dr. Krahnert; Jenifir Bruno, M.D., assistant medical director, FirstHealth Hospitalist Services; Dan Barnes, D.O., president, FirstHealth Physician Group; Craig Humphrey, interim CEO, FirstCarolinaCare Insurance Company; and Suzanne Wilson, M.D., hospitalist physician and chief medical information officer, FirstHealth of the Carolinas.

A question-and-answer session will follow the discussion.

“Over the past two-and-a-half years, I have been involved in many programs on health care topics and the enormous challenges we face in the delivery and payment of health care in our country,” says Christaldi. “All are beyond anyone’s understanding. The Foundation is hosting this complimentary program to address the confusion and to provide a better sense of clarity on those issues personally affecting us when we visit our primary care physician or if we should need to visit the hospital.”

There is no charge to attend the program, but reservations are required and can be made by telephoning (910) 695-7510 or emailing lholland@firsthealth.org. Those planning to attend are encouraged to send in questions prior to the program so that some of their topics can be address during the panel discussion.
