PINEHURST – FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital has expanded its Hospitalist Service by adding pediatricians to the program that has been in place since 2003.

The previous program served hospitalized adults age 18 and over. With the addition of the pediatric service, two board certified pediatricians are now available to serve children in the hospital – newborns and up.

“The addition of pediatric hospitalists to Moore Regional’s Hospitalist Service brings a new level of care to our program,” says Dan Barnes, D.O., president of the FirstHealth Physician Group. “The program gives 24/7 physician access to our youngest patients, providing routine pediatric care for newborns in the nursery as well as inpatient care for children in the pediatric unit while allowing community physicians to focus on their outpatient clinics.”

Nicole S. McMahon, M.D., and John M. Kerr III, M.D., the pediatricians staffing the new service, are responsible for the in-hospital care of infants in the hospital’s 18-bed newborn nursery and youngsters being cared for in the eight-bed inpatient pediatric unit. Their services include head-to-toe assessments of newborns as well as breast-feeding assessments and parent education.

They communicate regularly with the hospitalized child’s regular pediatrician or family care provider and then return the patient to the care of the regular provider at discharge.

“One hundred percent of our focus is on kids in the hospital,” Dr. McMahon says.

“We don’t like children to be sick, but we like to be there when they are,” says Dr. Kerr.

Dr. McMahon, who is new to FirstHealth, earned her medical degree from the Duke University School of Medicine. She completed her pediatric internship and residency at Louisiana State University Children’s Hospital in New Orleans and is experienced in general pediatrics, pediatric hospitalist medicine and pediatric emergency medicine.

Also board certified in internal medicine, Dr. Kerr has worked with FirstHealth’s Hospitalist Service since 2006. He earned his medical degree from the University of Kentucky’s College of Medicine and completed a combined internal medicine and pediatric residency at the University of Kentucky.

He also serves as the hospitalist physician for children in the FirstHealth Hospice & Palliative Care program.
