Richmond County Employers Hope to Get Employees Fit with “RichmondFit” |
All Richmond County businesses are invited to join in the challenge aimed at improving the health of the entire community. “We’re encouraging any Richmond County employer, large or small, to join the RichmondFit challenge,” says Amy Hamilton-Forester of FirstHealth Community Health Services and a member of the Richmond County 2020 Task Force. “By joining RichmondFit, employers can make a positive impact on the health of their employees while improving the health of the entire community.” This marks the second Ready, Set, Walk! challenge conducted in Richmond County. During the first challenge, RichmondFit participants walked the equivalent distance of 1.5 times around the world. For this fall challenge, the Richmond First-In-Health 2020 Task Force hopes RichmondFit participants will walk the equivalent of two times around the world. “Based on the success we had during our first challenge, we are confident this event is going to be even bigger and better,” says Forester. Employers and employees joining the Ready, Set, Walk! challenge will compete to walk the most steps over a one-month period. The challenge officially begins Sept. 22 and will continue through Oct. 27. To participate, companies must register by emailing Roxanne Elliott of FirstHealth Community Health Services at rmelliott@firsthealth.org. Deadline to register is Sept. 17. Once a company is registered, or if a company has participated in the past, its employees should register individually, linking to the respective employer at www.richmondfit.org. Individual participants will be able to track their steps over the course of the competition through the website’s fitness tracking component. The competition isn’t limited to walking as the only way to earn points, though. Participants can take part in the physical activity of their choice – swimming, aerobics, biking, house-cleaning, etc. – and then enter their information on the fitness tracker for conversion into steps. A kickoff event for the Ready, Set, Walk! challenge will take place at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, at Cole Plaza in downtown Rockingham. Participants will begin the competition with a one-mile fun walk to earn bonus points. Organization and individual prizes will be awarded at the competition’s end. Individuals who reach 150,000 steps by Oct. 27 will be eligible for a final prize drawing. The small and large businesses with the greatest average of steps will be recognized as will the top three individuals. Participants must be present at the celebration event to win. |
