Montgomery County Employers Are Getting Employees Fit with “MoCoFit”

| Date Posted: 8/26/2014

MoCoFitMONTGOMERY COUNTY – Montgomery County employers are entering into a friendly competition hosted by the Montgomery County First-In-Health 2020 Task Force to see whose employees can get fit in the MoCoFit – Ready, Set, Walk! step challenge.

Montgomery County employers are invited to join in this fitness challenge aimed at improving the health of Montgomery County employees and the entire community.

“We’re encouraging any Montgomery County employer, large or small, to join the MoCoFit challenge,” says Roxanne Elliott, of FirstHealth Community Health Services.  “By joining MoCoFit, employers can make a positive impact on the health of their employees while improving the health of the entire community.”

Employers joining the Ready, Set, Walk! challenge will compete for the most steps walked by their employees over a two-month period.  The official start of the challenge is Sept. 8, and it will continue through Nov. 3.

The official website for the challenge is www.mocofit.org.  The first step to joining the challenge is registering companies to participate.  To register your company, email the company name, number of employees and primary company contact and email address to rmelliott@firsthealth.org.  The deadline to register a company to participate is Thursday, Sept. 4.

Once a company is registered, employees can then register individually at www.mocofit.org and link to their employer.  The website contains a fitness tracking component that will allow employees to track their steps over the two-month competition.

The competition isn’t limited to walking as the only way to earn points, though.  Employees can take part in the physical activity of their choice, whether it’s swimming, aerobics, biking, fishing or even house cleaning.  The fitness tracker on mocofit.org will convert all types of physical activity into steps.

A kickoff event will take place from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, at Montgomery Community College.  Employees will begin the competition with a one-mile fun walk around the college campus, and the first 150 people to attend will receive a free MoCoFit pedometer.

Organization and individual prizes will be awarded at the completion of the competition.  The business with the greatest average number of steps will be recognized, and individuals who earn at least 240,000 steps by Nov. 3 will be eligible for the final prize drawing.

To sign a business up for the challenge, email rmelliott@firsthealth.org.
