PINEHURST – Dennis Campbell, M.D., discovered neurosurgery during his medical school rotations.

He had always known his career path would take him toward surgery, but he hadn't decided on a specialty. His perspective changed with that medical school exposure.

“Neurosurgery is very challenging, very rewarding,” he says. “And it can help patients dramatically.”

Dr. Campbell, who completed his residency as chief neurosurgical resident at Wake Forest Baptist Health, will soon become the fourth neurosurgeon with FirstHealth Neurosurgery. He will join Carol Wadon, M.D.; Bruce Jaufmann, M.D.; and Larry Van Carson, M.D., in the specialty practice that is located at 10 Aviemore Drive in Pinehurst on July 31.

Dr. Campbell graduated with high distinction from the University of Nevada in Reno with a major in biological sciences and earned his medical degree from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem. He completed an internship in general surgery at Wake Forest Baptist Health before completing his neurosurgical residency.

He is fully trained in both complex and minimally invasive spinal surgery as well as surgery for tumors affecting the brain and pituitary gland and neurosurgery for movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor including deep brain stimulation.

While an intern and resident in the Department of Neurosurgery at Wake Forest Baptist Health, Dr. Campbell assisted in two research programs on the development and testing of novel brain tumor therapies at the Brain Tumor Center of Excellence. He also assisted with a research study on the use of brain MRI to predict outcomes in critically ill neurologic patients at the Stanford Stroke Center at the Stanford University School of Medicine in California.

He is a resident member of the Tumor, Cerebrovascular, and Stereotactic and Functional sections of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.

A Nevada native, Dr. Campbell moved to the East Coast for medical school and liked the area so much that he and his wife, a Tennessee native, decided to put down roots. Their young family also includes two children: a 5-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl.

“We love North Carolina,” he says.  “This is home.”

FirstHealth Neurosurgery is located at 10 Aviemore Drive, Pinehurst. To make an appointment with Dr. Dennis Campbell or one of the other providers there, call (910) 715-8700 or (855) 535-8700.
