Susan G. Komen Charlotte Grants Funds toMontgomery and Richmond counties

| Date Posted: 4/21/2014

PINEHURST –Susan G. Komen Charlotte has awarded $906,000 to 17 local health programs that provide screening, education and treatment to individuals with limited resources in its 13-county service area. These grants provide breast cancer assistance in areas ranging from mammograms and diagnostics, education and outreach, to treatment support through qualified grantees.

FirstHealth of the Carolinas was the only new applicant to receive the award this year. FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital and FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital were awarded $22,806 to provide free screening mammograms in the two counties.

Komen Charlotte Community Health Grants support under-served, under-insured and uninsured populations in central North Carolina. Grantees are chosen by an independent grant review panel that scores breast cancer projects and programs on the impact, capacity, collaborations, sustainability, feasibility and evidence-based strategies that will best serve people in the service area.

“FirstHealth is honored and excited to be a new grantee of Susan G. Komen Charlotte,” says Chris Miller, administrative director of FirstHealth Community Health Services. “Given the demographic of our patients, screening for breast cancer is essential.”

“We often find that people will forgo necessary health screenings because of the lack of insurance or access to affordable health care,” says John Krahnert, M.D., chief medical officer for FirstHealth of the Carolinas. “This grant gives us the opportunity to provide mammogram screenings for patients who may not have access to health care, and assist with awareness, education, screening and treatment.”

This year’s grantees include the following organizations:

  1. Cabarrus Health Alliance
  2. Carolinas Medical Center – Northeast
  3. CaroMont Cancer Center at CaroMont Regional Medical Center
  4. Chestnut Grove Community Center
  5. Lincoln County Health Department
  6. Carolinas Rehabilitation – Main
  7. Girl Scouts Hornets’ Nest Council
  8. Mecklenburg County Health Department
  9. Novant Health – Huntersville, Presbyterian and Matthews Medical Centers
  10. FirstHealth of the Carolinas – Montgomery and Richmond Memorial Hospitals
