The FirstHealth Bariatric Center follows the National Institutes of Health (NIH) guidelines when considering a patient for bariatric surgery. You are a possible candidate for weight loss surgery if:
• Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is 40 or higher (morbid obesity) OR • Your BMI is between 35-40 and you have obesity co-morbidities, such as high blood pressure or diabetes AND YOU • Are age 18 – 60 • Are more than 100 pounds over your ideal weight • Have a history of failure to control weight through other methods such as diet and exercise BMI is a measurement of a person's body mass index, based on height and weight.
