SANFORD – A board certified neurosurgeon with FirstHealth Neurosurgery now holds office hours at the FirstHealth Back & Neck Pain Center, 1227 Carthage St., Sanford.
Larry Van Carson, M.D., joined the FirstHealth UNC practice in 2009, coming from Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center at West Virginia University, where he was an associate professor in the Department of Neurosurgery and the Department of Surgery (Plastic). As a full-time, faculty-rank employee of the University of North Carolina, Department of Neurosurgery, he maintains staff privileges at UNC Hospital as well as at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
In Sanford, Dr. Carson is available for both new patient and established patient appointments as well as patient follow-ups.

Dr. Carson is board certified in both neurosurgery and plastic and reconstructive surgery, and his special interests include complex spine and craniofacial surgery. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia-Augusta, where he also completed advanced training in both neurosurgery and plastic and reconstructive surgery.
As a surgical resident, Dr. Carson received the Harvey Cushing Society’s Van Wagenen Fellowship for study in Europe from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Resident Research Award at the 30th annual Meeting of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
