Dr. Bradley to Join FirstHealth Family Medicine in Candor

CANDOR – It wouldn’t be technically correct to call the move of Betty Bruton Bradley, M.D., to the FirstHealth Family Medicine office in Candor a “homecoming” since she actually returned to the Eagle Springs family farm where she grew up in 2007.
But the opportunity to affect the health and well-being of a community with the resources of an organization with the scope of FirstHealth of the Carolinas is one that she has looked forward to for a long time.
“It’s good to be able to deliver primary care in a large network,” she says. “I appreciate the resources of a large network in that you have the tools to impact the health of a population. You still do it one patient at a time.”
Dr. Bradley, who will join Larry Elliott, P.A-C, in the Candor clinic later this month, has been overseeing the family business, Bruton Vineyards, for the past six years. During that time, she has commuted to the Asheboro and Randleman offices of White Oak Urgent Care.
The hectic schedule hasn’t given her much time to reacquaint herself with the community or to get to know many of the area’s residents who might also become patients. “I look forward to getting to know people,” she says.
Dr. Bradley comes from a family with a long association – both personal and professional – with Montgomery and Moore counties. Although now a vineyard, the family business was for many years a peach farm operated by Dr. Bradley’s late father, Ed Burt Bruton. Her mother, Betty Lou Bruton, continues to be involved as do members of a large extended family that includes at least two others in the health care field.
Her father’s brother, David Bruton, M.D., was a pediatrician who started Sandhills Pediatrics and who continues to advocate for community health through such organizations as the Moore Free Care Clinic. John Monroe, M.D., the husband of her aunt, Evelyn Bruton Monroe, was for many years associated with Pinehurst Surgical. Both he and his wife, a former member of the State Board of Education, also remain active in the community.
Dr. Bradley says she “looked up” to both uncles, but she calls the late Robert Koogler, M.D., of Candor, and the late Charles F. “Buck” Scarborough, M.D., of Star, her “role models in family doctors.”
She describes herself as the same kind of “front-line clinical physician.”
“I am definitely in the trenches,” she says.
Dr. Bradley earned her undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her medical degree from the Duke University School of Medicine. She completed a family medicine residency at Southern Regional Health Education Center (SEAHEC, then the Duke-FAHEC residency program) in Fayetteville. She practiced family medicine in Bladenboro and Elizabethtown for 25 years before joining the urgent care practice in Randolph County in 2007.
A member of the American Academy of Family Practice and the N.C. Academy of Family Practice, she is board certified in family medicine.
