SANFORD – For people who are morbidly obese (more than 100 pounds overweight) and who have been unsuccessful in controlling their weight through diet and exercise, weight-loss surgery may be an effective treatment option.

Raymond Washington, M.D., medical director of the FirstHealth Bariatric Center at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, will present a weight-loss surgery information session Thursday, Sept. 26, at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center, 1801 Nash St., Sanford. The free program will begin at 6 p.m. in Classroom103.

Dr. Washington began his extensive bariatric training by assisting on more than 250 bariatric cases. As medical director for the FirstHealth bariatric team, he now provides leadership and direction for the program.

He is a member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons and is certified by the American Board of Surgery. He was recognized for his achievements by his alma mater, St. Joseph's University, when he was made the institution's spokesperson and national representative.

FirstHealth's Bariatric Center offers Roux-en Y divided gastric bypass, the adjustable gastric banding system, and sleeve gastrectomy or gastric sleeve surgery. However, surgery is just one component of the unique program, which also includes nutrition and behavioral counseling and the assistance of a registered dietitian who specializes in working with weight-loss surgery patients.
