Veteran Hospitalist to Lead Program at Moore Regional

PINEHURST – A physician with an extensive background in hospital medicine will become medical director of the Hospitalist Service at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in March.
Gary G. Gammon, M.D., is the prior medical director of the Hospitalist Program at Gaston Memorial Hospital, a 435-bed acute-care hospital in Gastonia. At Moore Regional, he succeeds Dan Barnes, D.O., who leaves the position to concentrate full time on his role as president of the FirstHealth Physician Group, an organization of FirstHealth-employed providers.
“We are excited to have Dr. Gammon join our team,” Dr. Barnes says. “His experience as a hospitalist and as a leader makes him uniquely qualified for the medical director role. We feel privileged that he chose FirstHealth, and we anticipate that he will make a significant impact. Change is never easy, but we anticipate a smooth transition based on Dr. Gammon’s qualifications and passion for inpatient medicine.”
Hospitalists are physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners who practice medicine only inside the hospital and do not have an outpatient practice or work in an outpatient setting. Moore Regional has 36 hospitalist physicians, all of them board certified in internal medicine, and another 15 physician assistants or nurse practitioners. There are also four hospitalists at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital and two at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital. Van Slaughter, M.D., serves as medical director of those programs.

Dr. Gammon received a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and earned his medical degree from the University of Vermont Medical School. He was chief medical resident while completing his residency in internal medicine at Ohio Valley Medical Center.
He is board certified in internal medicine, and is a member of the American College of Physicians and the Society for Hospital Medicine.
Dr. Gammon began his medical career with the U.S. Public Health Service Internal Medicine Practice in Buckhannon, W.Va., serving as chief of staff for St. Joseph’s Hospital. He later served as chief of the medical staff at Gaston Memorial Hospital while practicing internal medicine with Gaston Medical Group.
He was medical director of the Hospitalist Program at Wilson Medical Center, a 220-bed community hospital in Wilson, N.C., before being recruited to serve as medical director and help establish the Hospitalist Program for CaroMont Inpatient Physicians at Gaston Memorial. That program grew from only Dr. Gammon to more than 30 physicians in its first eight years.
Raised in Maine and Vermont, Dr. Gammon is married and has one son.
