ROCKINGHAM – Two new physicians have joined FirstHealth Richmond Medical Group – Internal Medicine and Family Care, a FirstHealth of the Carolinas medical practice that provides care to children and seniors as well as adult patients.
Helen Pham Khan Mantila, M.D., and Mohammed Sharouk Khader, M.D., are members of an internal medicine and family care team that also includes Stephen Chiu, M.D., who joined the practice earlier this year. FirstHealth Richmond Medical Group – Internal Medicine and Family Care is located in Suite H of FirstHealth Richmond Medical Plaza at 809 Long Drive, Rockingham.
Dr. Mantila, who is board certified in family medicine, relocated from California to North Carolina last year. She earned her undergraduate degree from Purdue University in Indiana and her medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine before completing a residency in family medicine at the University of California-San Diego (UCSD).
She served as an assistant clinical professor and assistant residency director at UCSD from 2006 to 2011.
Dr. Mantila says she “loves being a family doctor.”
“I truly enjoy providing health care to the entire family,” she says. “There is great value in a doctor knowing the whole family, and family medicine is unique in our training to be able to care for children, adults and seniors. The diversity of the care we provide in family medicine is extremely rewarding. I particularly enjoy practicing preventive care and participating in patient education.”
Dr. Khader earned his undergraduate degree from Purdue University in Indiana and his medical degree from India’s Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, where he also did his internship.
He completed his residency at McLaren Regional Hospital, an affiliate of Michigan State University, and is board certified in family medicine.
Like Dr. Mantila, Dr. Khader enjoys the variety of family medicine as well as the opportunity to care for families. “I chose to specialize in family medicine, because this field offers something unique and special in terms of the variety of patient problems, caring for the patient as a whole, care across all age groups and coordination of care with sub-specialists,” he says. “All these different dimensions of patient care are a crucial part of what we refer to as high-quality, comprehensive health care.”
Both physicians say they have been impressed by the quality of the local medical community and look forward to their new roles in a team that is committed to serving the residents of Richmond County and surrounding communities.
“There is a common goal of providing complete and compassionate health care to this community,” Dr. Mantila says. “There is a need for access to primary and preventive care in Richmond County as well as all over our nation, and I am proud to join the FirstHealth team as a family doctor.”
“The Richmond County medical community includes highly respected and experienced physicians who have won the loyalty of their patients through their long-term commitment for people in the local area,” Dr. Khader says.
Dr. Chiu, the third physician in the internal medicine and family care practice, joined FirstHealth of the Carolinas as a hospitalist at Moore Regional Hospital before moving to the clinic in Rockingham. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and his medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University.
He completed his internship and residency at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville and specializes in internal medicine.
