Having a loved one in the hospital is hard enough. When it means being far away from home, it’s even harder. The Clara McLean House was built to give out-of-town patients and their families a place to call home during a stressful time.
Conveniently located just across the street from FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Clara’s House provides comfortable, affordable accommodations and other non-medical support services to families of patients receiving treatment at Moore Regional Hospital, the Surgery Center of Pinehurst or the FirstHealth Hospice. Guests are referred by physicians, nurses or other professional staff at FirstHealth facilities.
Funded by the Foundation of FirstHealth, this dream of a supportive services facility began to take shape in 2001. Studies were conducted, other hospitality houses were visited, and plans began to develop. At the same time the Moore Regional Hospital Foundation began the CARE Funds to assist with lodging, transportation, medication, and other essential needs, especially for those with cancer and heart diagnosis. In late 2002, a significant donation of over one million dollars furthered the causes of these advocacy programs for patients and their families. The hospitality house was envisioned as an ideal home for the CARE Funds.
In 2004 the advocacy programs continued to develop and expand. FirstHealth announced three major capital programs, the hospitality house being one of them. This five year effort raised a total of $5.5 million for the hospitality house project. A longtime benefactor of the Foundation programs, Miss Clara McLean, was another important catalyst for the hospitality house project. Miss McLean was raised in Maxton, NC and lived the latter part of her life in Pinehurst. She had many philanthropic interests including caring for patients and the problems they encountered with transportation and access to care. She believed the hospitality house and supportive services would aid patients and families that traveled to Pinehurst from outlying areas. Her support and dedication to the vision led the house being named inher memory.
The FirstHealth core purpose is to care for people. The Clara McLean House embraces a caring community and is home to the Cancer and Heart CARE Funds and their respective CARE-Net programs.
