Sandhills Race Series Announces Spring Winners, Fall Schedule
| Date Posted: 7/23/2012
PINEHURST – Runners from 10 to 70 and above were announced as age division winners of the Sandhills Race Series during the organization’s spring 2012 awards ceremony.
Many local area runners participate in the series, which will begin its third season this fall. The goal of the series is to promote and increase participation in local races. Several races have been part of the series for the past two years and have experienced a 40 to 50 percent increase in their registrations. That has helped them provide additional funding to the charities they support, race organizers say.
Twenty-three area adults, teens and children were recognized as Sandhills Race Series award winners during the organization’s recent spring 2012 awards ceremony. |
The name Verchick came up at least three times during the recent Sandhills Race Series awards ceremony when three members of the family received first-place awards for their race series participation. Pictured (from left) are Curt Verchick, first place, 10 & under male; Ben Verchick, first place, 11-14 male; and Abby Verchick, first place, 15-19 female. |
Featured races in the spring 2012 season included the ShamRock n Roll, Run for the Ribbons, DAV and Manna Run. The President’s Day Run, Mardi Gras Run and Hoyt Kennedy 5K were bonus events.

The fall 2012 season will begin with a bonus event, Run for Their Lives, which will be held in Sanford on Saturday, Aug. 25. Other fall season bonus races will include Miles for Mira, Saturday, Oct. 20; and the Scarecrow Run in West End, Saturday, Oct. 27.
