It is no secret that cancer takes a toll on the body of those suffering from the disease. Cancer can cause pain and fatigue and cancer treatments, such as radiation or chemotherapy, can cause hair loss and suppressed appetites. (Source: American Cancer Society) A survey conducted on behalf of ”Look Good…Feel better” showed a third of respondents said their altered appearance, due to cancer, has had a negative impact on their relationship with their spouses, and 25% reported a negative impact on their relationships with their children and friends.
Look Good…Feel Better is a nonprofit organization that offers free tutorials on make-up, skin-care and wigs. It was founded in 1987 when a physician asked former Personal Care Products Council President, Ed Kavanaugh if he could organize a makeover for a woman in cancer treatment who was self-conscious and depressed due to her change in physical appearance. After the makeover, the woman was much happier and felt less burdened. That is when the Personal Care Products Council saw an opportunity and immediately offered funding and cosmetics for the program. Look Good…Feel Better is now sponsored by the cosmetic industry’s Personal Care Products Council Foundation, the American Cancer Society and the Professional Association/National Cosmetology Association and companies such as Aquaphor, Charming Charlie’s, Clarisonic, Dior, Sexy Hair and InStyle.
