Diet Restrictions after Bariatric Surgery

| Date Posted: 5/7/2012 | Author: Mandy McCue

Overview

Bariatric surgery is a weight-loss procedure for people who are considered morbidly obese, which would equal a BMI of 40 or higher. Weight-loss surgery is designed to help jump start the weight-loss process but it’s only part of the total change required to reach and maintain a healthy weight.  Diet and lifestyle changes are also needed to help make the effects of the surgery last a lifetime.

Take Shelly for example; she was morbidly obese. In addition, she also suffered from other weight related medical conditions which made it difficult for her to walk, let alone work out. She stated that dieting never did anything except put on more weight after she finished the diet.  After a few years of debating, Shelly decided to undergo weight-loss surgery. She lost 158 pounds giving her a jump start to living a healthy life. After her surgery she created The World According to Egg Face blog. Shelly did a lot of research before her surgery and wanted to be a resource for others after her surgery. She provides stories, recipes and inspiration for others in similar situations.

Diet restrictions

Understanding how to eat properly after weight-loss surgery is vital to being successful with the procedure long term.  Bariatric patients recommended daily diet includes:

  • 2 servings of milk
  • 2 servings of vegetables
  • 2 servings of fruits
  • 3 servings of fats
  • 2 starches
  • No more than 30 grams of carbs
  • 80-100 grams of protein
