Cancer Treatment Options: StealthStation

FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital offers many different treatment options for cancer including surgical technology devices that allow surgeons the ability to target precise locations. One treatment option that is available is the Stealth Station.
StealthStation is the world’s most accepted image-guided surgery system. It allows surgeons to focus on the exact location they need during surgery without compromising surrounding tissue or nerves. The StealthStation combines traditional images from CT Scans, X-rays, Ultrasound and MRI’s and transforms them into 3D images. The StealthStation is accurate to less than one millimeter.
“The technology combines the two biggest advances in neurosurgery in the past 40 years- 3-D computer imaging and the operating microscope. The Stealth Station is a significant improvement,” says Dr. Eisenberg, professor and chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
How does it work?
The StealthStation works by analyzing pre-operative diagnostic scans, such as CT scans or MRI’s, than transforms that information into 3D images. This helps surgeons map the safest, least invasive route to the target site in the patient’s body.
In the operating room, the StealthStation system can combine the pre-operative images with the 3D real-time images allowing the physicians to view them from every angle, The StealthStation can also transform into an image viewing tool. It can keep record of the patients imaging history. (Source: Science Daily)
The StealthStation, by Medtronic, is an advanced tool that allows surgeons to focus on their patients, not their medical equipment. It also enables them to decrease the size of the patient’s incision and reduce the procedure’s invasiveness, shorten operating times, and can also lead to a faster recovery time for the patient.
“The Stealth Station makes surgery faster, safer, and less invasive, “says Dr. O’Malley, director of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, and associate professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. (Source: Science Daily)
According to Dr. O’Malley, the Stealth Station can reduce time spent in surgery by 40 percent and since if can reduce recovery time, the time spent in the hospital is cut in half. All of these benefits lead to the StealthStation being a cost effective treatment option.
