Run for the Ribbons to Benefit FirstHealth’s Cancer CARE Fund

| Date Posted: 4/2/2012

Pinehurst Elementary School teacher Jane Hall and her son made a family event of the 2011 Run for the Ribbons fundraiser. The 2012 Run for the Ribbons 5K and Family Fun 1K will be held Saturday, April 7, in conjunction with the 61st running of the Stoneybrook Steeplechase at the Carolina Horse Park. Proceeds will go to the Cancer CARE Fund of the Moore Regional Hospital Foundation.

PINEHURST – Laura Kuzma calls the Moore Regional Hospital Foundation’s Cancer CARE Fund “a blessing” for patients and families.

Even more meaningful, she says, is the fact that Cancer CARE Fund services are funded by the community for the community. Kuzma is coordinator of FirstHealth’s Cancer CARE-Net program, which pairs cancer patients with “buddies” who assist them in various ways through their unique health care journey.

“It’s almost as if the community is collectively wrapping its arms around those in need,
Kuzma says. “I can promise you the patients and families feel that and appreciate it greatly.”

The annual Run for the Ribbons 5K and Family Fun 1K brings awareness to the Cancer CARE Fund, which provides financial assistance and personal resources to hundreds of local cancer patients and their families in such areas as transportation, prostheses, wigs and nutritional supplements. The 2012 Run for the Ribbons will be held Saturday, April 7, at the Carolina Horse Park at Five Points near Raeford.

Participating in the Run for the Ribbons, to be held in conjunction with the running of the 61st Stoneybrook Steeplechase, guarantees an exciting day of competition, cancer awareness and survivor celebration. Participants can honor someone who is important in their lives or celebrate the memory of a deceased loved one by running or walking in one of the event’s races.

All proceeds will benefit the Cancer CARE Fund.

The Run for the Ribbons 5K will take place on the grassy track at Stoneybrook, where runners and walkers will travel a cross-country trail through the scenic woods. The Family Fun 1K will take participants one lap around the steeplechase track.

The 5K begins at 9 a.m., and the 1K gets under way at 10:30 a.m. Since both events will recognize local cancer survivors, “Ribbons of Hope” will be distributed to highlight the leading cancers that are diagnosed and treated in the Sandhills.

The 5K pre-registration fee is $30, and the registration fee for the 1K is $15. Fees include a T-shirt as well as admission to the Stoneybrook Steeplechase.

Participants can pick up their packets Friday, April 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the FirstHealth Center for Health and Fitness-Pinehurst or at the Stoneybrook track starting at 7 a.m. on race day.
