ROCKINGHAM – Laurie Marks, WHNP-BC, has devoted her professional life to women’s health.

As a labor and delivery nurse, staff nurse and patient educator, she has a wide range of experience in caring for women of all ages.

Marks brings that background and experience to her new role as women’s health practitioner with FirstHealth Richmond Medical Group – Women’s Center. She joins a practice that also includes Mohamed A.Y. Ibrahim, M.D.; Donald C. Jones, M.D., Ph.D.; Angela Morrison, M.D.; and Nasser Askary, M.D.

In her new position, Marks provides normal obstetrical, postpartum and gynecological care.

“I enjoy taking care of women,” she says. “I think that it is important that women have a practitioner that they can talk to about problems they may be having.”

Aside from a year as office staff nurse for a neurology clinic in Harrisonburg, Va., Marks has spent her entire career in women’s health. Before assuming her new role with FirstHealth Richmond Medical Group – Women’s Center earlier this month, she spent 20 years as a labor and delivery nurse at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital, where her responsibilities included labor, delivery and postpartum care, newborn baby care, lactation support and new staff orientation.

She was also a charge nurse for the labor and delivery unit and served as a childbirth and breastfeeding educator.

Marks received her associate degree in nursing from Sandhills Community College in 1991 and a B.S. in nursing, summa cum laude, from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2008. She says her desire for more nursing education led to her decision to become a women’s health nurse practitioner.

She earned her M.S. degree in nursing from the Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner Program at Frontier Nursing University in Hyden, Ky., last year.

“I had been an R.N. for 20 years concentrating on women’s health, and I wanted to further my education to provide care to the women of Richmond County,” says Marks, who is certified as a women’s health nurse practitioner and as an inpatient obstetrical nurse.

A resident of Richmond County for most of her life, Marks and her husband Greg have three sons: Evan, 18; Ryan, 13; and 18-month-old Jack.

Away from work, she is a soccer mom who enjoys watching son Ryan play soccer. She also enjoys reading, a pastime she hopes to have more time for now that she has completed her master’s degree.

“I am looking forward to reading novels and not as many textbooks,” she says.

Laurie Marks, WHNP-BC, is now accepting patients at FirstHealth Richmond Medical Group – Women’s Center, 921 Long Drive, Suite 207, Rockingham. To make an appointment with her or with one of the other providers, call (910) 417-3477.
