FirstHealth Hosts Annual Medical Symposium

PINEHURST – More than 130 physicians from throughout the mid-Carolinas attended the annual Pinehurst Medical Symposium hosted by the Office of Continuing Medical Education at FirstHealth of the Carolinas.

The program, which was held March 3-4 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, consisted of medical updates and also covered lifestyle matters and end-of-life issues.

Opening-day topics focused on “Lifestyles and Smoking,” “Exercise Is Medicine,” “Alcohol Abuse,” “Prescription Drug Abuse,” “Weight Loss without Surgery” and “Surgical Weight Loss.”

Topics covered during the March 4 session were “Dementia in the Elderly,” “Cough,” “Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension,” “Health Care Reform” and “TB.” A concluding session on End-of-Life Issues centered on “Navigating Advance Directives” and “Hospice and Palliative Care Updates.”

Medical faculty included the following: James F. Donahue, M.D., pulmonology, and Jan Busby-Whitehead, M.D., internal medicine, School of Medicine, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Victor F. Tapson, M.D., pulmonology, Howard J. Eisenson, M.D., family practice, and Jason E. Stout, M.D., MHS, infectious diseases, Duke University School of Medicine; Fernando S. Cobos, M.D., FirstHealth of the Carolinas Behavioral Services; Michael A. Antil, M.D., Michael A. Pritchett, D.O., MPH, and Ellen M. Willard, M.D., Pinehurst Medical Clinic; and Raymond G. Washington Jr., M.D., Pinehurst Surgical.

Non-physician faculty included John S. Caliri, FirstHealth Centers for Health & Fitness; Capt. W. Jerrell Seawell, Moore County Sheriff’s Department; Blair Childs, Premier Inc.; and Kenneth L. Burgess, J.D., Poyner Spruill LLD.
