Expert on hereditary breast, ovarian cancer to speak at Moore Regional

PINEHURST – An expert in the field of hereditary cancer will speak during an upcoming Moore Regional Hospital Foundation program on hereditary breast and ovarian cancer.
Cécile Skrzynia, MS, CGC, is director of Genetic Counseling Services, Department of Medicine and Department of Genetics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her program, titled “Am I at Risk? An Overview of Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer,” will be held Thursday, Oct. 20 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Clara McLean House at FirstHealth.
Skrzynia, who has a master’s degree in genetic counseling from the Medical College of Virginia, started the UNC Cancer Genetics Services program in 1996. Her interests are in hereditary predisposition to developing breast and ovarian cancer and more recently in the genetics of cardiovascular diseases.
During her FirstHealth presentation, Skrzynia will discuss the role that genetic makeup and family history play in a woman’s risk for breast and ovarian cancer and why the identification of genetic markers for these cancers became the standard of care.
The Clara McLean House at FirstHealth, where Skrzynia’s presentation will be held, will open next year as a hospitality house on the FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital campus. Located at 20 FirstVillage Drive, across Memorial Drive from the main hospital entrance, it will be a “home away from home” providing lodging, meals and other support services for patients who are undergoing treatment at the hospital and/or their families.
